Transformations

Once Emerged from the Gray of Night by Paul Klee (1918)

Our spring 2025 program is on the theme of Transformations. Day into night, winter into spring, life into death, creation and destruction, harmonies stretched and slowed, melodies turned into soundscapes, and songs about the transforming power of love.

The repertoire includes a commissioned piece from British composer Louise Vincent (inspired by the Klee painting above), songs about spring from medieval England and 19th century America, choral classics by Samuel Barber and Gustav Holst, a love song from the Middle East, songs about the ocean and the power of hurricanes, and piano music by Henry Cowell, György Ligeti, and Sergei Rachmaninoff. With the help of the audience we’ll build a “spring song soundscape” and sing a joyous round by William Billings.

With Phil Brown Dupont, piano and J. Fenn Ziskind-Waldermacher, percussion.

Saturday May 17 @ 7 pm, Columbus Mennonite Church
Sunday May 18 @ 3 pm, King Avenue United Methodist Church
